I went to Colston Secondary school and although I'm 49 now a lot of the wee films I've just watched bring back such fond memories of exactly how it used to be. We were so primed to become housewives and baby carriers even in the early 70s. All that domestic science and housewifery...
My God it was so funny. Washing one week and ironing the next with what would be considered today as wireless irons Ha ha ha! Those were the days, the Electric Gardens, the Jamaica Inn when we left. Spending those big wages. I had 3 jobs right enough. 1 full time and 2 part time. Great Times (we think).

Hi...I also went to Colston although...in the early seventies. I'm 44 now. We had some real character teachers! My older brother James (50) and my cousin Alan Downie (51) would have been there at the same time as yourself. We recently came across an old black and white photograph of a play they did in the assembly hall. Also I do remember the Jamaica Inn. I had some great nights in there around '79, although the bouncers could be difficult. If they didn't like the look of the guys we just didnt get in!

I recall the queues to get in there on a Saturday night - they were huge. I have heard of the Electric Garden. It was at the end of Sauchiehall St but it had changed its name by my time. It might have been renamed 'Shuffles' but I'm not sure. Anyone else out there with memories from Colston in the early seventies? I would like to compare notes on teachers.

Here's another one who went to Colston. I went in early 60's. Used to walk and save the penny from the tram fare. Or "borrow" a pals pass. Still remember the wee house in the playground we had to clean from one end to the other as one of the domestic classes. I still think about it today when I'm dusting I am in my late 50's now but what fond memories of those school days.

Well, I attended Colston Secondary from 1969 - 1973 I worked there for about 4years before I immigrated to Canada in 1978. Does anyone out there remember me?? If so, I'd love to re-connect.

Stephen, Your memory serves you well. Neilly McGowan was captain of that team and is a bit of a legend. I had the privilege to play with him in a trial for The Peasies when I was a strip of a lad... [that was before I signed for them some years later] They've just been promoted this season and did well in the Scottish Cup. Keep on messaging!

I remember him well. A great teacher and a nice guy. Not bad with the belt, though didn't use it much.
Also remember wee Cagney (Mr Fraser) another great teacher.

Stephen, I remeber Mr Campbell the PE teacher. He taught me to swim. I remeber we had to walk all the way from the school to Kay Street baths in the foulest of weathers. That was before the school had its own pool built.

I have just read Stephen Dewar's message. I was in the same class as his brother Jim. We knew him as Jazz or Jazzer. He smoked like a lum... but he could run like a whippet! We were in the same athletics teams that won gold at the Glasgow Schools Championship - must have been about 1970 or thereabouts. I still see one of our old classmates Brian "Ginny" Campbell, about the town.

I too remember going to the dancin' - my fave spot was "Clouds" on Renfrew Street where "Tiger" Tim Stevens was the DJ. He worked in the "Caley" Railway workshops where I served my apprenticeship as an electrician. Colston was the right school for a grounding in a trade.

Did anyone out there follow Petershill FC? My gran took me everwhere to see them as a wee boy - when I eventually signed for them, it was signing on for Real Madrid! For you exiles, the Peasies are having a brand new stadium built adjacent to Petershill Road - about £5 million pounds worth!

I remember several teachers at Colson - Mr Dibble (English) took the fitba' team. Mr Watson was P.E. teacher - Auld "Shand" (Mr McGhee) was history - why was he called Shand????... Wee Ian Tominey took P.E.... Ian Mclachlan was an English teacher who took the fitba' team and he himself played for Queens Park. Mrs Brownlie tooks maths, as did another old bloke, can't remember his name, but could he draw the belt! I used to do a mean impersonation of him - ah, his name was McAuley. They were all good teachers and pretty fair. Anyone out there go to Knockburn Primary? It is about to close - I visited the headie last October and took some photos of the old place for posterity. Gotta go. Look forward to seeing your updates.

Hello David and thanks for that response. My brother Jim lives in Edinburgh now and still smokes like a lum...but still pretty fit! I will mention to him that you wrote here and see what he remembers. Many of the teachers that you mention from Colston were still there when I arrived there in August 1972 and I recall them well... Auld Shand...his full title was 'Auld Shand the cave man'....he was still there when I arrived..I remember one day when he turned his back to the class someone put on his deerstalker hat and when he turned back around he didnt even notice!

Mrs Brownlie was there teaching with incredible speed, bustling around the room up in the was was called C block at the time. Tominy was a not a popular teacher.. he tended to discriminate against anyone overweight or small and along with Campbell (also PE) had a reputation in giving out the belt with some vigour. Cagney (Mr Fraser) was also still there although I never got him. We had a Mr Taylor who had a long grey beard and wild straggling hair, but he was good. I don't know if you recall Miss Tudhope Maths? An old lady who used to give out mars bars if you wore a uniform. Most of the teachers were excellent to be fair, although some such as Mr Copeland the metalwork teacher were lethal if they got out of the wrong side of the bed.

I used to watch Petershill now and again they had a balding left back called Neelie Macgowan I think it was...didn't know they were moving stadium...You mentioned the Caley..my cousin Billy Manning was also doing his electrician appreticeship at the time..mabye you recall him...My brother Jim also did his electrician apprenticeship although not with the railways..thanks for the reply...

Jacqueline, do you remember the Assistant 'Headie'?. I cant rememeber his name but he was known as Wee Wiggy. He had long white hair and used to wear a black beret and kilt. The Headmaster was Mr Allison -if my memory serves me right.... As i now think of it -there was a Mr Riddle who was in charge of English - he could fair draw the belt...names are coming back to me as I write.. was there a Mrs May who took Sciences...? There was Mrs Munday who was my Registration teacher.. Miss Tudhope who took Maths.....and I think the Janny was Mr McLaren - before he retired.....

Stephen, your cousin Billy and I started in the Caley on the same day. We were good mates and went to Springburn College together. I was at his 40 th birthday party in the Smiddy in Cumbernauld... maybe you were there. I still see him from time to time in Tesco!
