Greyfriars Bobby

On January 14 1872 the famous dog Greyfriars Bobby died.

Today in 1979 saw the birth of Scotland's first test-tube baby. Grace Montgomery from Lennoxtown gave birth to Alastair, the country's first "test tube" baby. The embryo was created by Prof. Robert Edwards with surgical procedures being performed by Mr.Patrick Steptoe. Edwards and Steptoe were also the team responsible for the birth of Louise Brown, the world's first "test tube" baby, born on 25 July 1978 in England.

Today's recipe: use fresh Scottish haddock and mussels in this great family soup. Smoked Highland chowder.
