On this day in 1842 Glasgow's Queen Street train station opened.

Originally called Glasgow Dundas Street the station was built by Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway to link the thriving city of Glasgow to the nation's capital. The station and line took four years to build.


French Revolutionary Wars: Sir Ralph Abercromby and a fleet of 18 British warships invade Trinidad.


Today's recipe: a subtly spicy tea time indulgence. Ginger sponge cake.
