There are fun filled activities for children to do within the Technology - Things we wear unit of study. The children will undertake activities to find out more about materials. Please use the pre-loader buttons on this page. This will save time downloading the activities in class and can be done from this page beforehand. If possible, pupils should watch the television unit which supports this site and which deals with clothes for particular weather: What? Where? When? Why? - Weather Wraps and What? Where? When? Why? - Suitable Suits. For transmission details click here. Viewing these programmes would help the children as they attempt the various activities in the site.
The What section deals with suitability for function.
Strands and Attainment Targets Knowledge and Understanding Needs and how they are met: talk about some everyday needs and the things that are made to meet these (level A). Resources and how they are managed: talk about how materials can be used or changed for specific purposes (level A).
Level A - suitability for function: matching 3 different types of fabric to 3 specific weather conditions (hot, rainy, cold).
When the matching game is completed, there is a reward task to design a T-shirt that can be printed if wished. Level A - designing and making a T-shirt from given criteria.
The Where section looks at materials and where they come from. All processes have been simplified and only show the main steps. Our process shows fleece to jumper, but teachers can make children aware of other items which can be made from wool e.g. blankets, socks etc. If required, the pupils can do further research in the classroom.
Strands and Attainment Targets Knowledge and Understanding Processes and how they are applied: give examples of sequences through which some familiar products are made (level B).
Level B - pupils learn about the sequences of manufacture from raw materials to end products. Pupils will match the raw material to end product.
The When section follows one particular design process. It should be noted that this is a sequence that follows the design process used in this site. The order may change in another design process. Pupils should watch the clothing factory video clip before attempting this section of the website.
