1886Scottish Home Rule Association was formed to campaign for a Scottish Parliament to be set up in Edinburgh
1934Formation of the Scottish National Party (SNP)
1974SNP wins 30.4% of the Scottish vote in General Election and puts pressure on the Labour Party to accommodate the demands Scottish voters
1979Labour Government holds a devolution referendum. The referendum fails the rule that at least 40% of the eligible electorate vote 'yes'. In the event only 32.9% did so.

The 1979 Referendums
1979The Conservative Party, led by Margaret Thatcher and opposed to devolution, wins power and remains elected for the next 18 years.
1987An organised, cross-party campaign for Home Rule is formed.
1989The Scottish Constitutional Convention is formed. Representatives of the Scottish Labour, Liberal Democrat and other smaller parties sign a Claim of Right for Scotland. This included representatives of a broad range of other elements of Scottish society including local authorities, churches, trade unions, women's movements, ethnic minority groups, and sections of the business community.

1997Labour Party gains power and produces a White Paper Scotland's Parliament.
1997Devolution Referendum held in Scotland. It was designed to entrench the Scottish Parliament's limited power to raise, or lower taxation according to its policy priorities. The questions asked were:

I agree that a Scottish Parliament should have tax-varying powers

No 36.5%
1998The Scotland Bill receives Royal Assent.
1999Election of the Scottish Parliament.
2003Second term of Scottish Parliament begins.
