Explain the differences between Source A and Source B.
Every part of the ship has been fitted up with careful attention to the accommodation and comfort of the passengers. Great attention has been paid to the lighting and especially the ventilation of the ship. We can safely say that we have rarely seen a ship where the space allotted to passengers was as roomy as on the Mooltan. The journey to New Zealand should be like a summer cruise.
Advert for the Mooltan, published in the Greenock Advertiser in 1849
The friendless emigrants were stowed away like bales of cotton or packed like slaves in a slave ship. During storms the hatches had to be closed, shutting out both light and air. Passengers were kept below decks unable to do any cooking - not even to warm a cup of water - because the seas would flood their fire. After a week at sea, to hold your head down a hatchway was like holding your head down a suddenly opened sewer.
Account of an emigrant ship in ‘Redburn: His First Voyage’ by Herman Melville, 1849
