Now read Chapter 4 paying particular attention to what it tells you about Mrs Scott and the society in which she lived. 1.	"When he caught a cold she didnt mollycoddle him, much as she wanted to. When he got into the inevitable fights in school, she washed the blood and didnt scold him."

2.	"She dragged him home and gave him a terrible thrashing. After she had gone to bed she listened to his crying and prayed."

3.	"She didnt speak to Mrs Macleod for months, though at times she realised that Mrs Macleod had acted from the best of motives."

4.	"she didnt want Iain to be getting mixed up with girls. They werent what they used to be, hard-working and conscientious."
