Process

Our coastal landscapes are constantly changing as a result of natural processes. Some of these processes happen relatively quickly and can be seen in action, such as the shifting of shingle on a beach by powerful destructive waves. Other processes - like the erosion of solid cliffs to form a cave - happen very gradually, often over many millions of years.

There are three main processes which alter the coastline. These are:

  • waves,
  • weathering, and
  • erosion.

Each plays an important role in shaping the many features of our coastline.
