Features
The features of Scotland’s coastline are many and varied; from the wide sandy beach of Balmedie to the rugged cliff faces of the Bullers of Buchan. The landscape, with its often dramatically different characteristics, is the product of processes which have shaped the coast over millions of years – and continue to do so today and in the future.
In order to understand our beaches, cliffs and rock faces, it is necessary to look at the forces which have influenced their development.
There are three main areas to consider. These are:
- coastlines of erosion,
- coastlines of deposition, and
- coastlines affected by sea level changes.
Throughout the thousands of miles of Scottish coast there are many stunning examples of all these features.
