Conflicts
When people interact with the surrounding landscape, conflicts can arise. What do we mean by conflict in relation to how we affect our environment?
Our environment provides many social, economic and environmental opportunities - but every opportunity can sometimes involve conflicting interests.
For example, it may be very beneficial for an area’s economy to develop its beach into a commercial tourist attraction, but this action may be damaging to the environment (perhaps threatening local wildlife).
Conflict can occur between
- the environment and humans
- different groups of people who have opposing interests
If people are to coexist with the natural environment, it is essential to find the balance between these many different interests.
The issues can be very complex and there are many factors to consider.
What are the conflicts?
How do we find solutions?
How effective are those solutions?
In this section we will look at some specific examples of issues which have arisen at sites along the North East coast, when the relationship between people and the coastal landscape has resulted in conflict.
