Albert's Story
My mother remembers when, as a child, she visited her grandmother (Albert's mother), who lived just across the road. This would be in the 1940s. She remembers her grandmother trying to feed this portrait of Albert with chocolate, and becoming distressed because "he wouldn't eat it". Of course, this frightened and upset my mother at the time, but it's a simple and poignant illustration of how wars affect so many countless people; those killed on the front line, and their families.
Albert was killed "without trace" at Ypres on 15th February 1915.
