George Benjamin's Story
George Benjamin Steel was born in Islington in 1881.
He married Catherine (Kate) Thompson on 12th April 1903 at St Andrew's Church, Bromley-by-Bow, in the East End of London. George & Kate were my great-grandparents, the parents of my beloved paternal grandmother Elizabeth (Betty), who was 10 years old when her father was killed at the Somme on 21st September 1915. He was a Corporal in the Royal Fusiliers.
