Soldier Record

A pre-war milkman, "Happy Jack" had two daughters when he joined up. Late in the war he was badly wounded in the leg. He recovered in England and was discharged from hospital to find the war over. He was posted to the British Army of Occupation in Germany to finish his military service. When finally demobbed, he found walking difficult and could not resume his milk round. To support his family he became a dock stevedore, working for the "docker's tanner". His family expanded to one son plus two more daughters. Times were hard, but "Happy Jack" always came smiling through.
