George Ashcroft, aged 27, a canal bargeman, joined the King's Own Royal Lancashire Regiment on 31 May 1915. On 16 January 1816, ge embarked at Siythampton and arrived at 55th Division Base Depot, Rouen on 17 January. On 18 January he was admitted to hospital with scabies and returned to Base Depot on 7 February. On 11 February he joined the Battalion in the field and on 2 June 1916 he was wounded by shrapnel. He returned to battle and was killed in action on 3 August 1916 on the Somme. George, son of the late Charles and Mary Jane Ashcroft of Albany Terrace, Brieryfield Road, Preston is commemorated at Thiepval Memorial, France and on the Roll of Honour at the Harris Museum Memorial Wall, in his home town of Preston. I am his great nephew.
