Stanley's Story
Stanley Jones from a small town in Wales travelled to Perth in Scotland in 1914 to enlist in the Gordon Highlanders. We have no idea how Stanley made his way there at the tender age of 19 years. He leftbehind his mother and father, two sisters and a brother. Stanley fought in many battles in the Great War at Ypres and the Somme. He suffered horific injuries and was one of many who were "gassed". Returning home life would never be the same for him although he trod the pathway ahead with great fortitude. He never spoke of the terrible war he valiantly fought in but remained brave as he faced the future with long term illness and much pain. He married his dear wife Winifred, had daughters Olwen and Nora, little baby Winifred who sadly died at the age of 4 months, and sons Allen and Michael. Allen married Irene, they had two sons Patrick and Nicholas. Stanley died at the age of 66 after many years of suffering. Patrick and Nicholas now find that they had a grandfather wh fought in the Great War together with a great grandfather who died in the Great War. We always remember Stanley at this time of remembrance and now able to honour him on The Wall. Blessings and Love to dear Stanley of the Gordon Highlanders - the beautiful red poppy is worn with pride in your honour. Sleep peacefully.
