Ernest John's Story
Ernest joined the Bedfordshire regiment about 1914 and was in the second battalion. As a Private soldier he saw action in France. In June 1916 he was part of a reconaissance party two days before the start of the action on the Somme. The party was lost for 24 hours and when they arrived back two of the six men were missing. Ernest was one of the four who arrived back. They were all afterwards awarded a military medal. Members of the family say he was a quiet family man who could turn his hand to any job. He was also very patient and kind.
