Wilfred's Story

Wilf told me that he experienced at Ypres a cavalry charge and saw tanks. One of his memories was that sometimes the German trenches and British trenches were so close together that they could shout to each other. One time he and his friends heard the Germans shouting "Gott mit uns!" (God with us). Wilf and his friends put their gloves on the end of their rifles, waving them over the top of their trench shouting back, "We've got mittens too!"
