John Robert's Story
John Robert (Bob) to all his friends and family was as great a dad any one could wish for, hard working, with a mild manner ready to help any one .He very seldom mentioned the war or his experiences in the army, and I never learned the reason for his award The Military Medal. There was one rare story he told me, about the time, as a driver of a limber which he said was a double trailer pulled by a pair of mules, when taking supplies to the front line. On the journey out he was shelled (the road was elevated with no cover ) but arrived and delivered the supplies .For the return his limber was loaded with the bodies of fallen soldiers. On the journey he was spotted and was again shelled, this time the rear trailer was blown off and one of the mules sustained a severe wound to its flank. On arrival back to his depot he discovered all the bodies had been lost as well as the rear trailer. I do wonder if this episode had something to do with his Military Medal, I did not ask and I do not think he would tell. When the second word war started he joined the Home Guard, and as a child I remember he really enjoyed his home guard weekends. He is remembered most of all as loving father by the family.
