Robert's Story
Robert Smith was my father's uncle and therefore my great-uncle. He was a Private in the 1st/6th Bn., Black Watch and was killed on Friday, 26th October, 1918. He died barely two weeks before the end of the First War at the Battle of Valenciennes.
In 1953, at my parents' wedding, one of my mother's uncles, Bob Duncan, told my father that he had fought alongside Robert Smith in the Black Watch and had actually helped bury him on the battlefield after the fighting was over. An amazing coincidence, but it just reminds my generation just how close-knit these fighting units were, coming from the same town or village.
Robert Smith was re-buried in Maing Communal Cemetery, near Valenciennes.
