Henry William's Story

Henry was my grandfather, he was a born military man through and through and intolerant of small children. I don't know if he attained any rank but if he did it would have been as a Senior NCO!

British troops at that time were sent to India partly to complete their training and also to defend the North West frontier. Grandfather spent most of his time 1914-1918 in India but he was due to be posted to the Front just as the Armistice was called - a huge relief to the whole family.

He delighted in telling me about the First World War and the places he visited all over India. He must have been an early amateur photographer because I remember hundreds of the crinkly edged sepia prints depicting mainly the life of ordinary people in India. For me even at a young age and still suffering from the result of the Second World War, it was an education to see the deprivation and the squalid conditions the Indian people lived in at the time.
