Jabez's Story

Jabez Smith, King's Own Lancaster Regiment

Jabez Smith joined his regiment in 1914. He went to France in January 1915. His brother, Tom Smith was in the 5th Battalion. He went straight to Belgium and was posted in the Ypres Salient where he spent approx. 3 months in the trenches and he was killed on the 8th May at the Battle of Frezenberg Bridge just after the first gas attack on the Ypres Salient, which was the reason for this battle. He left a widow, Nellie Smith who eventually cam eto live in Nottingham with her 3 daughters; Edna, Esther and Edith. His last Daughter, Edna has the middle name Dorrien, this is believed to be named after his General who was Genral Dorrien Smith. His Daughter, Edna is still alive today and lives in Beeston. Jabez' name is on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres.
