Samuel's Story

Samuel was killed in the period of the crisis in April 1918 when the 5th army was driven back by overwhelming numbers across the formor Somme battlefields and the months that followed, which became known as the "Advance to Victory", which began 8th August 1918.

Samuel had a friend Jimmy or Billy who returned from the war with a head injury which cused him to have siezures. During these "spells" he would call out to Sam urgently, yelling for him to come back (they were in a British trench) Sam apparently did not heed him and was ambushed and bayoneted by German troops who had overrun the British trenches.
