Frederick Charles's Story
A letter from Colonel F W Muller:
Dear Mrs Bircher
I feel I must write you a few lines of sympathy over your sad loss. I would have written before but am in hospital and only heard the sad news this morning from one of my officers. Your husband was very loyal and true man. Some time ago I was asked for a thoroughly reliable man for some work well behind the lines and asked your husband if he would like it.
He told me that if I did not mind he would rather stay and look after his officers this meant of course a hard life and continual danger. It made me feel very proud that my men perfered staying in danger with me instead of wanting to go to a comfortable safe billets. I was so grieved when I heard but I hope your sorrow will be eased a little by knowing that although he was putting his pound as a humble private he was honoured from his commanding officers down.
