George's Story

George Manning joined the Territorial Force at Derby in 1910. He served as a territorial until war broke out in 1914. In 1915 he was sent to fight in France with the RFA. At some point he was wounded by shrapnel. He kept pieces of this shrapnel in a leather case between two pieces of gauze for the rest of his life. As a child I recall being shown the metal fragments that were taken from his body.

He was moved to the labour corps where he gained his sergeant stripes. He was discharged from the army after eight years and 239 days of service and picked up the threads of everyday life again. He lived until 1966 and died on May 27th of that year aged 74 years.
