Oliver's Story
Family legand has it that Oliver was killed at the crest of the British trench atfer taking the place of his officer who had been killled seconds before. We know now not only his date of death but also the time - 6am, 4th October 1917.
I can remember my nan telling me how when Oliver and his brother Charles had leave to visit home from the war, my great nan, Mabel, would make them wash in a tin bath in the garden before she let them in the house. This was so they could enter the house clean and to get rid of the lice.
I wanted to come to the national memorial today to make sure they were also remembered along with many others. Also to see if I can gain more information about the Daltons. We know little about the second eldest, Charles and it would be good to find ot more about him.
