Edwin (Ted)'s Story
Ted was my grandfather and brother of George Garraway also on the wall.
Ted served in the Machine Gun Corps in, I am told, the Northamptonshire Regiment
He served in the Machine Gun Corps between 1915 and 1918. Over a third of the men who served in the Corps became casualties with 12,498 being killed. Ted was gassed in the trenches and returned to England to marry my grandmother.
He never spoke about his experiences until the end of his life when he confided in his vicar who told me, after his death, how he had hated war and everything to do with it.
Like many men of this generation not only did he fight in his own war but his son, my father, served in the Second World War. One can only wonder what the men who fought in the First World War felt about sending their sons to the Second?
Ted received a small army pension of a few shillings a week to add to his national pension.
He was awarded the Victory and British medals and a certificate commemorating his service in the Machine Gun Corps.
