George Ernest's Story

My grandfather's brother, Ernest, died on 12th October 1918. He had been on leave only 6 weeks before. When news of his death came through it had to be kept from his mother who was seriously ill. She died a month later. Ernest's father, my great-grandfather was later Chairman of the War Memorial Committee.

It is interesting to note that Ernest's battalion were not able to return until the night of the 22nd/23rd October, and had to fight across the bodies of their fallen comrades.
