Charlie's Story

My great uncle, Charlie Black was born in Anstey, Leicestershire in 1899. He first joined up well under age to his local regiment in Leicestershire. Once his father found out what he had done he forced young Charlie out of the army. Charlie was not to be denied the chance to fight for his country, so he ran away to Scotland and joined the Highland Light Infantry. He was sadly killed on 25th March 1918 aged only 19, near to Maricourt in France, in an action where his commanding officer Lt Col William Anderson was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross. Charlie will never be forgotten. From a very proud great nephew, Paul Sharratt
