Frederick's Story
My grandfather never spoke about the war, few did, but I remember and have taught my children a song he used to sing from the great war. It went:
I dont want to go down the trenches again
Where fritz and his crew take the six o clock aim
Take me over the sea
Where the germans they cant get at me
Oh my I dont want to die
I want to go home,
He was a gentle man. We did find out that he experienced hand to hand fighting and was buried alive but pulled out just in time. He also said when he was extremely old and had gone back to the horror of the war in his mind that his mate had been speaking to him as they went over the top. A shell came down and when he next looked up and went to talk to him his face was gone. He was injured and came home.
My great uncle Lionel was at Passchendaele. He was 21 and died on the first day. His body was never found, well not yet anyway, and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate.
