Frederick enlisted in London in 1903 aged 21, before that he was a plumber. By early 1914 he was married and had six children (a seventh was born during the war), they were stationed in India and when war was declared Frederick set sail for France with the 9th Brigade Royal Artillery. He was involved with the defence of Festubert and was "blown up", later in the war RSM Frederick Measures transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and then the Tank Corps as an instructor before being discharged in August 1918. Frederick died in January 1919. He was survived by his wife and seven children some of whom emigrated to Australia.
