Frank Bernard's Story

They only gave the officers a pistol and a whistle, the other chaps had rifles

The attached photo is cropped from a section photo of 47 men of 2 /LT. Crabtree's section. He worked his way up through the ranks and according to his Medal card was W.O. II, C/S Mjr and 2/Lt. His name was submitted in Sir Douglas Haig's Despatch of 7th November 1917 "as deserving special mention" (Published 14/12/1917 in The London Gazette) but we do not know what he did to deserve special mention. He went on to serve his country again in the Second World War. Married To Minnie and father to Robert, Leonard and Dorothy, a gentle man for all the horrors he must have seen.
