George's Story
DCM medal - for marked gallantry & good work north-west Cambrai, between 27 Sept & 3 October 1918:
During the attack the advance was checked by heavy machine gun fire. He went forward alone, located the machine guns and led an attack on them. Also received a Military Medal 1918. (London Gazette - 1 January 1919).
Copied from the London Gazette, Serjt. 17th Battn. 1 January 1919, Since November 1915 he has acted a signal serjeant. In addition to his technical skill, which is of the best, he has proven himself in action to possess cool courage and devotion to duty, notably when mending lines in the Douve and Menin Road sectors and, maintaining communications during the battle of St Quentin in March 1918. From April to July 1918, he performed the duties of a signal officer most successfully."
