John's Story

He was shot in the head and left for dead

He joined on 15th September 1903. Served seven years 325 days in the Army Reserve then served three years 332 days with the colours. He claimed to be one year older than he was when he joined up. His number was 7689. He was shot in the head whilst carrying out some day to day chores of trench life. He was left for dead until someone saw that he was alive. Luckily the bullet had passed downwards into his shoulder. The bullet was left in and it was passed out later on in his life I believe. He was discharged 2 July 1915 as being unfit for further service by a Major of the 3rd Battalion of the fusiliers. He left the army as a private. I suppose although the wound was to trouble him the rest of his life it was the reason that he survived the war and was not returned to service to be killed at a later date like so many were.
