John's Story
Recalled to the Army in 1914 along with his best friend Jack Rhodes (later to win the V.C.). Killed in action October 1914 at Ypres.
He took cover in a shell hole but was killed when another shell landed in the same place
Apparently, he went out to repair the wire in front of the British positions when an enemy barage opened up. He took cover in an existing shell hole but was killed when another shell landed in the same place. This is how his death was described to his parents by his close friend Jack Rhodes VC, who was himself killed 1917.
He was buried at Ypres at the time of his death but, as was the case with many others, over the course of the war his grave was lost and he is now commemorated on the Menin Gate.
Not forgotten and he was always fondly remembered by his brothers and sisters, as was his friend Jack.
