William James's Story
A grandad I alas did not meet but I wish I had. He served until 1920 in Mesopotamia. These soldiers in Mesopotamia were no less brave than other battles. It has been very difficult to research my grandfather's war.
They fought not only in the field of battle but the cholera that killed a great many of their friends. While marching up through Mesopotamia they found the poor people of the country starving. The soldiers gave most of their meagre rations over to the starving people. The men in this area of the war were as brave and fought as well, but the media seem to forget to tell their story. I am proud of my grandad and am the poorer for not knowing him.
