Frederick's Story
I lived with my Grandfather and family, and remember many stories he told of the first world war. He, along with other soldiers, was a very brave man. Frederick was in the Camberwell Gun Brigade, then Tank Corps. He was fighting in the Somme and Yypes. He was gassed three times and was sent home to recover, only to be sent back again and fight, this time as Sergeant in the tank corp. Apparantly, since he was lucky to have had an education, he was give the job because he could read the manuals!!
he had to play dead, as the enemy was prodding him with a bayonet
One story sticks in my mind, when he was ambused by Germans and his pals were killed, and he had to play dead, as the enemy was prodding him with a bayonet.
He was a special Grandad until his death in 1984 aged 93.
