Alfred F's Story

The brave father-in-law who I never knew

43602 Sgt Alfred F Ratcliffe joined the 8th Battalion (Cyclists) Essex Regiment in 1912 as a Territorial. He was later moved to the 9th Battalion and served in France where he was wounded in 1917. He was awarded a Commendation for Gallantry and Devotion in the Field by H. W. Higginson, Major-General Commanding the 12th Division and later the Military Medal which appeared in the London Gazette of June 1919. He was employed at Crittall window manufacturing company for many years until his death in 1954. The son of his second marriage followed a military career and joined the Royal Army Medical Corps as a boy soldier, finishing his career as a Brigadier.
