Robert's Story

I never met my grandfather as he died before I was born. My mum tells me that he was a dispatch rider in WW1. I'm told that he was based in France, but don't know where. He contracted rheumatic fever and was sent to hospital in Marseilles. Some of his friends tried to catch it from him so that they could also escape the horror of the war. He got 3 medals from WW1. One is copper coloured with crossed swords and says 1914-1915, the next is silver with a horse & rider on one side and the king on the other, and the third has an angel on one side and "The great war for civilization 1914-1919" on the other, with a rainbow coloured ribbon. He also got a medal from WW2 called the defence medal.

From the medals I can see that his number was 17369.

His first theatre of war was France on 1st Dec 1915 and he was demobed on 11th Feb 1919.

His rank was private.

I also found a badge kept with the medals, which says 13th battalion RWF reunion. He was an ARP warden during WW2.

The rheumatic fever contracted during WW1 weakened his heart and he eventually died of heart failure at the age of 53.
