Cecil's Story
A painter and decorator by trade, my Grandfather L/Cpl Cecil Stewart died aged 29 on the 1st May 1917 at the 48th Casualty Clearing Station, Bray sur Somme during a 'quiet' period. According to the war diaries, he and his platoon were hit by a shell - four died instantly and three including Cecil were wounded. My grandmother was seven months pregnant. My Mother and Grandmother experienced a life of poverty in the East End of London to the extent that my mother was unable to go to Grammar School as they could not afford the uniform.
His decendants - three grandaughters and four great grandchildren are aware of his story and will hopefully pass it on to future generations.
