William's Story
Pte. William Beckett in uniform shortly after enlisting in 2nd Bn. Scots Guards in Glasgow, September 1914. Born in Balnamore, near Ballymoney in Northern Ireland in 1887, William moved with his wife Ellen and two young sons, David and John, to Glasgow for work. He embarked for France from Southampton in March 1915 and was killed in action on 16th May 1915 at the Battle of Festubert one of over 11,000 casualties. He was buried on 15th July 1915 by 'A' Coy. 2/Yorkshire Regiment but his and other graves where destroyed during later action in the area. William is remembered on the Memorial at Le Touret.
