William Thomas's Story
He had to point a gun at old men who looked just like his father
My mother remembers her father Bill Hill talking about joining the Navy at the young age of 13/14 and being on a supply ship at the Battle of Jutland. The Admiral came onto the ship to give a morale boosting talk saying he was not afraid of making hard decisions which may mean the sacrifice of some of his men. He rocounted how the British warships would apparently independently target their German counterparts however the enemy would all focus their guns on one ship at a time. I know he served on HMS Glowworm at sometime, I don't know whether this ship was at Jutland. He also apparently talked about going to Russia and at one point guarded grain stores which he found difficult having to at times point a gun at old men who looked just like his father.
