2nd Lieutenant Rota's Story
My grandfather was born in a small Maori community on the east coast of the north island of New Zealand in 1896. His name was Rota Waipara and he was the last in a long line of generations of Maori warriors. He joined the New Zealand Army in 1914 as a private. He fought at Gallipoli and on the Western Front in France and Belgium and worked his way through the ranks to 2nd Lieutenant.
