Hugh's Story
Hugh was the first of three brothers to be killed in 1918. He was a Corporal No. 521, 10th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment and he died on 22nd March 1918. His two other brothers died in August and September of same year.
Rifleman William Bracken no.20551, 1st/5th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment born 1885 and killed 20th September 1918
Gunner Arthur Bracken no. 119566, 127th Battery, 29th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery born 1890 and killed 29th August 1918.
They were all the sons of Arthur and Margaret Bracken, Arthur (Snr) was a Land Agent for the Earl of Clancarty in Ballinasloe, Co. Galway Ireland. He died in June 1890 and his wife died in July 1890, only three weeks after her husband and two months after her fourh child who only lived for a year. They were all survived by their only sister Margaret who was 31 when they were all killed. They had been brought up by their uncles and aunts after their parents died.
Their cousin Rifleman Henry Bracken of Royal Irish Rifles had already been killed in Ypres on 10th June 1915, but another cousin Richard Bracken survived the Somme while serving with the Irish Guards and died in 1963.
