Herbert Leslie's Story
Lance Corporal Herbert Leslie Webster 29310, was a son of Charles and Edith Webster of Forest Avenue, Fishponds, Bristol, Somerset as it was then. He was born in Birmingham in 1899.
He Enlisted with The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in Bristol on 29th March 1916, having previously been with the Territorial Reserve Battalion (Service No. 8/9355). Herbert was allocated to the 7th Battalion DCLI and posted to Europe. Unfortunately Herbert was posted as missing, believed killed in action on the Somme on 2nd April 1918. The death of this 19 year old brave young man was later confirmed, killed in action. He was killed in the period of crisis of March to April 1918, when the 5th Army were driven back by overwhelming numbers of enemy forces across former Somme Battle Fields. Herbert is Honoured on Panel 45 of the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France. Herbert was awarded, The British war Medal, The Allied Victory Medal and Bronze Death Plaque with Honour Scroll.
