John Albert's Story
John Albert was shot in the left knee with a machine gun. He was operated on - back in England - and his knee was fused together with two joiner's nails - one 4inch and 6inch. He was a strong man before the war, but the subsequent blood poisoning weakened him. John died of nephritis - inflammation of the kidneys - and uraemia. Such a sad, lingering end for a brave British soldier.
Hard as nails
His wife Bertha lived to be 90 and is buried in the same grave at Darwen Cemetery. He also left four children aged 13 to a baby.
