James Thomas's Story

James Thomas Smith was my paternal grandfather and enlisted with his entire Heriots class in 1916.

James fought at the battle of Cambrai, but I know nothing fiurther of his war service. He died in 1986 after marrying Mary staniland in his mid forties.

I remember my Grandad as being a wee quite man with a pipe. He never spoke about the War to my father or myself. I remember that he shuffled and I was told that this was because of wounds to his legs. I recently found some of his letters which showed him to be a passionate and loving man who suffered from the ghosts of his past.

I also found a number of his war photos which have been presented to the Seaforths museum at Fort George.
