James Rose's Story

James was my great uncle, who I only recently discovered. James Rose Wilson was part of the BEF, Scots Guards 7726, he died of wounds and is buried in Bayeul Cemetry, Paris, France. He died on 22/09/1914.

His brother Edward Wilson was killed on the Somme, Cameronian Rifles, 1st Battalion. No 40307, no grave, missing on Somme,Thiepval Memorial.

I attended the 90th anniverary memorial of the Somme this year with my young son. As far as I am aware this is the first time that a member of my family has ever visited one of our families war graves. It was extremely emotional and as is the experience of writing about these two young men who have been missing from my family history for the last 90 years.

I intend to visit James Wilsons grave next year and return to Thiepval for the 100th anniversary.

I have no pictures or anecdotal stories concerning these men. I can only surmise the horror of their experience and the grief of the family back home. My son and myself will be wearing their medals this armistice day for the first time. Only one son survived. My Great Grandfather Alexander Wilson.
