Willie's Story
My Grandfather lost his mother when he was a boy and his stepmother treated him badly. At the age of 16 he ran away from home, lied about his age and joined the Cameron Highlanders at the start of WW1.That was the first time in his life that he had ever had a new pair of boots, having been sent to school summer and winter in his bare feet.
He was wounded and sent home to recuperate before his 17 birthday and within a few months was back in France where he received a severe shrapnell wound to his face. After treatment at a field hospital he was discharged, given one year to live and sent home to die. He survived until a couple of years after he retired and never talked about his experienecs with the exception of a couple of light hearted ones.
My own father died in the RAF in 1945 and grandad was my role model as I was growing up.
