John's Story
My mother was his sister. His full name was John Lyons Berkman Harte but he enlisted as John Lyons in the RFA. As a child I viewed his three medals in fascination. I have nothing except these three commemorative medels and in recent years I know you left Dublin on 16th August 1914 and was killed 10 days later in the Battle of Le Cateau around 1pm on the 26th August 1914. Smith Dorrien commanding under Haig.
The Germans who held Le Cateau unti 1917 buried him in the RC cemetry of the town and it was there I found his grave in 1995 - the very first person in your family ever to find you and visit your grave. It was one of the most moving and saddest experiencs of my life - for your mother never had the money to ever visit. I felt like at last our family was visiting you after all those years.
