Charles's Story

From a newspaper clipping:

'Private C Brereton was a reservist of the South Lancashire Regiment and at the out break of the war was living with his wife and daughter in Montreal. He returned to England and was sent to France in the early drafts. He took part in the fighting at La Bassee. On October 24th he and his brother Sam disappeared with several companions. He was reported as a prisoner of war in Germany, of the others nothing was heard. On April 25th (1915) word was received that he was a POW in the concentration camp at Hamein in Germany. After many letters sent by his wife, some returned and some delivered to his brother Sam. It appears that is was his brother Samual Brereton who was the POW and that it was presumed that Charles Brereton was dead.'

Charles Brereton is remembnered on Le Touret Memorial.
